Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Jill Scott was raised by her grandmother and mother. The only child she has. Scott attended her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. Scott was a student in secondary school and also worked at two other positions. Her goal was to be an instructor of English at a secondary school. This dream however, ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of study and became a teachers' aide. She began her career as a spoken word artist who performed her own works in live poetry readings. She eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. In a Roots performance, she announced herself as a musician. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She was also able to gain experience on stage as she performed in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. She signed as the label's first artist.
